Nail splitting is not fun to deal with and can be extremely painful, so applying a nail care routine can help and even getting a gel nail manicure can help. How? They can provide extra strength and protection to your nails!

Why Do My Nails Keep Breaking?

Is your client asking you about their nails constantly breaking? Their nails can be brittle and weak for multiple reasons such as age, poor nutrition, or poor hand and nail care. While countering the effects of aging on nail strength is challenging, there are ways your clients can work to improve their nail strength outside of the nail salon.

How To Keep Natural Nails From Breaking

Preventing nail splitting lacks a one-size-fits-all solution, but there are ways to minimize the risk. One way is to be intentional about the food being consumed, but this does not mean giving out a nutrition plan to your clients. However, there are several recommendations on how your client can improve their nail care routines in between nail appointments.

Nutrition and Nail Growth

While food suggestions are valuable, understanding the importance of specific foods for nails is crucial. According to Mayo Clinic Health System, Vitamins A, E, and D; iron; good fats; carbohydrates; and protein all play a key role in your integumentary system. The integumentary system consists of skin, hair, nails, and glands. Here are a few foods that are quality sources for a better integumentary system, especially for nails:

  • Vitamin A: cooked yellow vegetables, liver or liver oil, and cooked leafy greens
  • Vitamin E: nuts, seeds, and fish
  • Vitamin D: eggs and fish
  • Iron: lean red meat and leafy green vegetables
  • Good fats: avocado, olive oil, canola oil, nuts and seeds
  • Carbohydrates: quinoa, lentils, whole grains, and vegetables
  • Protein: poultry, lean red meat, seafood, and fish

Nail Care Tips for Clients

Nail maintenance can be broken down into a few simple steps that can be easy for your client to adapt to. The goal is to moisturize the nails, protect the hands and nails, and maintain a nail care routine.

  • Moisturize the nails: When applying hand cream or moisturizer, your client should make sure to rub it onto their nails as well.
  • Use cuticle oil: Your client should avoid cuticle oil on their nails, instead focusing on their cuticles and skin.
  • Protect hands: Your client should use gloves when working with chemicals and should avoid long exposure to dry frigid temperatures.
  • Practice daily nail care: Your client should file their nails daily, push their cuticles back, resist picking or biting their nails, and keep their nails short to reduce the risk of breaking.

These are a few steps the client should take to work toward stronger nails to try and prevent nail splitting or breaking. Another suggestion is to use a nail hardener or strengthener to help protect the natural nail.

Does Gel Polish Strengthen Nails?

Absolutely! Need proof? Check out an Instagram Reel submitted by @loisbellamyx. This process spans months, providing the client's nails with a fresh restart for stronger and more durable natural nails.

A manicure topped off with a gel polish or builder gel from The GelBottle can also help keep their nails strong. It offers a protective layer against any external damage from chemicals or tearing. A manicure keeps cuticles and nail beds happy and cleaned up. By using this simple combination, the nail will not only stay well maintained, but the gel polish’s protection will also allow the natural nail to grow without interference. Doing so can lead to a longer, stronger natural nail.

Why You Should Use Builder Gel Polish for Your Clients

Your client can work on adjusting their personal routine, but as a nail technician, what can you do to help your client's brittle nails? We recommend using builder gel to help protect their nails while allowing the natural nails to grow. A Clear BIAB™ gel is a subtle way to deter nail biting or tearing while protecting the nails from breaking or splitting.
